Landscaping Plant Guide
By Lynn Ross

Proper selection of plants is easily one of the most important elements in successful and the use of a landscaping plant guide is helpful. Colors and plants are the elements that give the "life" to your yard. They also can be used for the purpose of providing shade, screening, controlling errosion, division of areas, focal points, and even noise control.  So selecting the correct plants for the right area and purpose is vital for professional looking results and providing a workable and easy to maintain landscape.

Some very common blunders that people make about plant selection, is usually because of a lack of knowledge.  Learning about the characteristics and growth habits of plants is important. You must consider the size the plants will reach at maturity, consider the light requirements, their tolerance to heat and wind, and know what their soil preference is.  You don't want to plant trees and shrubs that will grow to massive sizes next to a house and risk damage to the walls of the home or even cracking the foundation.

Do not make your plans while at the nursery or garden center. Do a some planning or homework. Know something about the plants you are looking for or what the characteristics of the necessary plants should be.  Going to the nursery with this knowledge will end in much better results.

It may be a good investment to purchase a landscaping plant guide that you can use for reference.  You can research plants that grow well in your specific zone.  You can learn every thing you need to know including the name, color, characteristics and much more.  You can save yourself a great deal of frustration by using a plant guide.  They are handy to carry along with you when  you visit the greenhouse or garden center.

It is important to choose plants that are appropriate to the zone you live in.  Just because they are featured at the nursery does not mean they will thrive in your area.  They may stock plants that do great in the spring but may not flourish in the summer due to extreme heat. Not all employees of garden centers know about all the plants they sell.  It is best to depend on your own knowledge to guide you in your selection.

It is fun to learn about plants.  Make a plan, get a landscaping plant guide, and have a beautiful yard.
